Sustainable Usage of Algal Biomass for Food Processing and Nutraceuticals Production
Abstract
The variety of products generated by the primary and secondary metabolism of various algae species amply supports the significance of these adaptable microbes as cellular factories. They can produce an affordable and renewable source of bioactive pharmaceuticals and food ingredients, including long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, single-cell proteins, carotenoids, and phycobilin pigments, which are applied in the food industry as functional foods and dietary supplements, in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, and the therapeutic field as nutraceutical compounds. Owing to their wide-ranging application possibilities in the nutraceutical industries, microalgae have recently gained a lot of interest on a global scale. Numerous species of microalgae have been researched for their potential to become high-value products with exceptional pharmacological and biological properties. This chapter discusses the insights into the different aspects and obstacles of nutraceutical compounds derived from algal biomass.
