Negotiating capture, resistance, errors, and identity: Confessions from the operating suite.
Abstract
Conducting research in medical settings can pose \nparticular challenges for research on adoption and \nadaptation to new technologies, especially when \nmedical errors are a subject of the research, or the \nresearch necessitates capture of user behaviors and \ninteractions. A case study of research in a clinical \nsetting explores the experience of the researcher as \nthey negotiate the practical challenges of research and \nresearch participants’ acts of resistance. The \nresearcher’s identity, as constructed in the medical \nsetting, serves to make this negotiation more complex. \nHowever, this case also illustrates the practical and \ntheoretical approaches that can be applied to overcome \nthese challenges.
