Model-Assisted Planning of Groundwater Development

Decision Support Systems

Abstract

Broadly speaking, planning groundwater development comprises two objectives: determining feasibility and ensuring optimality. This chapter adopts the optimization approach for model-assisted groundwater development planning, discussing various available options. The linked simulation optimization (LSO) approach is the classical optimization approach, wherein the two functions—checking feasibility and ensuring optimality—are performed simultaneously through composite simulation-optimization modeling wherein the planning problem is posed as the optimization problem. The chapter also discusses the planning problem that may be addressed with either a simulation approach or an optimization approach. The generic approach needs to be modified in two respects to solve the posed planning/optimization problem. First, the decision variables must be the crop areas rather than the pumping rate. Second, the feasibility of the assigned constraints has to be ensured for an indefinitely long-time duration.
